STEPHEN ANTONAKOS

BIOGRAPHY

Stephen Antonakos (1926-2013) was a Greek-American artist. His early works were predominately collages. However, after a trip to Times Square at night as a young artist, he was entranced by the effect of the neon lights on the cityscape. For the rest of his career, his works were influenced by this and he created intense, neon light sculptures. His sculptures involve using neon bulbs to create minimal, geometric forms. He worked closely in the 1960s with the Light and Space Movement. Later in his career, he translated this style to works on paper that mimicked the effects of his neon pieces.
