Jef Verheyen (1932-1984) was a Belgian painter. In a statement by the artist, he described his works best in that he believed it “oscillated” between opposites. His paintings straddle between black and white, clarity and obscurity, everything and nothing. To capture these contradicting positions, Verheyen narrowed his attention on the movement of his brushstroke. He aimed to hide the mark of the painter by using multiple layers of translucent glazes to create gradations of colour, as the Dutch Old Masters had. In addition, Verheyen also heavily studied the effects of light on colour.
